Acupuncture is the insertion of a single use sterile disposable needle for disease prevention or treatment. Acupuncture influences the physiology of the body, and can be integrated alongside conventional medicine or as a standalone treatment for a condition.
An acupuncturist inserts acupuncture needles at specific areas of the body based on your healthcare need to stimulate sensory nerves in the skin and muscle. This increases local blood flow. Increasing local blood flow is a catalyst for repair and healing which occurs through the release of neuropeptides and or the restoration of an equilibrium. Acupuncture decreases and suppresses pain. An acupuncturist initiates via acupuncture the release of opioid peptides, Beta-endorphin, enkephalin, serotonin and noradrenaline. This creates a natural healing response that positively changes a patient health status and well-being. Acupuncture can create and initiate a new sense of calm and relaxation.
Each patient has an initial consultation, this is where your treatment plan and acupuncture treatment is discussed and agreed. At the initial consultation a patient will receive their first acupuncture treatment, which is followed by a course of treatment suitable for the condition. A patient’s pathway can consist of an initial block of six to twelve appointments. The number of visits will be less (three to five) when the condition treated has a fast response. Patient care pathways can be more than twelve sessions, and is dependant on the nature of the condition and ongoing review. Patients can monitor and assess their improvement after each session. CE marked acupuncture fine needles are inserted into the surface of the body and retained in position for twenty minutes. Electro acupuncture which is the stimulation of a selected number of acupuncture needles (two to four) may be applied if not contraindicated and required. Other supportive methods may include auricular acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion (warming of an area), massage.

In England, the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) independently manages accredited registers which oversee professions not regulated by law, with health and care professionals practicing within and outside of the NHS in community settings. British Acupuncture Council members (MBAcC) are on an accredited register.
